Media

All types of art media have been used in art therapy sessions. A good therapist should encourage her clients to explore different media when she believes those media might be beneficial.

Drawing
A favorite medium chosen by clients, drawings are accessible, easily managed, and lend clients the most control.

  Painting
Another perennial favorite.  Watercolor and pastels are generally used in my sessions because of artworks can be created relatively quickly.  Some clients prefer to spend time to work on a painting via oil or acrylic, in that case, clients will bring their artworks into sessions for discussion and exploration.

  Clay
A tactile medium. Clay is malleable and is a wonderful tool for building 3-D projects. It can be pounded and slammed, and thus has also been used as an appropriate medium for anger discharge.  We will be using air clay in the sessions for the least amount of technique requirement and preparation.

Papier-mache
It is a versatile and tactile tool to make a 3-D project. Any themes traditionally used in Art Therapy can be used in papier-mache. However, please keep in mind that this art form does take longer that most other media and can be messy. However, the end result can be very rewarding and revealing.

  Collage
When you feel drawing and paining might be too threatening an activity, a collage can be used as a start. Ready-images are used for tearing, cutting and reassembling into your own art works.
