Often, clients choose their own themes or projects to work on for the sessions. Other times, the therapist will suggest a project for the client to work on when she feels the project will serve to help the client ease some life transitions or go deeper into some issues.
Life Review
Life review should not be limited only to the elderly. At crossroads, or major life transitions, life review can be a valuable tool for clients to assess the situation and life patterns. For clients who come to the sessions without any particular issues in mind, this can be a first project to work on.

Masks
A person can use masks safely explore “forbidden” emotions, fears and anger. Instead of suppressing threatening emotions and feelings, one can draw masks that reflect those emotions, and then weigh the options of either putting on the masks and acting out the feelings, or just having a conversation with the masks.
Masks can also be used by clients to “put on a brave face”. The above example is a “war mask” I did for myself a few months ago to confront some of my own fears.

Journals
This can be done simply or elaborately. I often encourage my clients to keep a journal alongside of the therapy sessions. Clients sometimes bring in their journals to discuss in the sessions.
